It’s better to read aloud than to subvocalize

When I read, I usually read in my mind. I always thought that the speed of subvocalization is equal to the speed of my speaking.

However, it’s actually not.

When I read aloud and listen my voice at the same time, I found that it was not as smooth as subvocalization, I needed to practice repeatedly to keep up with the speed of subvocalization.

So I think it’s better to read aloud when I read. In addition to being able to correct and adjust in time, it is more important to deepen “the sound memory”and lay the foundation for fluent speaking.

  1. This is a very good point Alice. When we subvocalise we don’t use our muscles in full. By reading out loud you get to practice using your mouth muscles at full range. And, you get to hear how it sounds.

    Great point!
