My Essay on The Third Ear Chapter4
On the chapter4, the author always stressed the point of view that barriers to performance in any area can be surpassed, whatever the height of mountain climbing or the record of the Olympic Games. Once the record has broken, the way is open for others to follow. This is obvious, a great performance in any area can be learned for a person. Of course, a language learning is no exception. Learning a languge should not be so difficultly. Look at the outside to the world, many people lived in one country and gradually learned the native languge. They learned the language through the daily communication. They are even unconcious. Like Chinese or English. As the author says, since millions of people can learned English and practice everyday fluently, why you can’t learned English? It’s totally no reason.
The first problem is solved, people can learned a language whenever they want to learn. Then let’s talk about the next problem, it’s possible to learn how to learn a language. As I said above, because some people were born in this country, they learned the first language from childhood. Maybe this is not informative. Now let me focus on how to learn a second language. Because most of the second language learners are adults. They probably are busy with work or life, and their time is limited. So how to learn is very important. Becuase the right method can help them to focus on his energy.
Obviously, different method to learning a language make a difference in the outcomes. You can learn a foreign language with the traditional way of classroom learning. You will focus on the ability of reading and writing. Of course that’s right, but maybe you will lack of some ability of speaking and listening. How about learning a language like a native person? After all, communicate to each other in a languauge before writing. We should change my order of learning a language. In the early, we should focus on listening and speaking.
In order to develop masterful performance in any area, we should learn to copy and copy to learn. In fact, children always use copying to learn new skill. And as the author said, whenever you want to learning a new skill or just be better at something, it’s useful to copy. The reason is simple. Everything is done in order. The experts always have the serious of actions, these are effective and practiced. In other words, you can reduce the cost of making mistakes. You can directly copy the correct programmes from the experts, include the sequences of pictures, movements, sound and actions. Until finally internalized, like a expert.
Like any other type of performance, for a language learning, copy to learn will be quickly and easily. The author find the most cases that the success strategies used by the people of the successful in learning a new language are very similar, and sometimes identical. So what does this mean? Success has something in common. The next thing to do is simple. Like the case of “father-and-son”, you should exactly learn a expert’s action. However, there is something different. Children always learned something unconciously. But we are adult, we can distinguish what good for us. We can use “the adult advantage”. It’s can be effective in learning process. For example, we can find one or some English experts, and observe his or her behavior in learning English, copy the learning habits and ways.
Of course, for adults, copying things is not just the steps, that is a begining. Like people learn art, they do firstly by copying the techniques from the experts. Next, they mastered and applyed the unconscious steps that experts use to generate the expert performance. I think this process is means “internalise”. It’s a process that from outside to inside, from action to emotion. This is a critical step.
Let’s discuss this viewpoint further. I means, the importance of internalizing output. As you see it, there are the two key point in the sentence. Firstly, let me continuely talk about the internalizing. Remember, you are just not simply copy to learn a language, you should learned the things that masters make use of inside when they are doing their thing. This is a internal logic. We are adults and analyze the things. So we can chose the best blue print for ourselves in the copying process. Secondly, the most important is output. It can be said the ultimate goal of learning a language. That’s why I ‘m writing the essay now. People express the thought through the languague, whatever speaking or writing. You have to learn to output. You will checkout you learning outcomes through your expression.
