The Third Ear page 9 My first written piece

I am very happy because I am writing a letter to you. This is the second letter I’ve written to you about the topic of learning English.

First, to answer the book’s question, I do not have experience with ordering food in English on a boat or train, but I want to write a story about it. The story will be about a young man who came from NY. He has to stay in China for about two weeks. One day, he hung out with his friend until late at night, so he did not want to cook. Instead, he went to a restaurant to order some fast food, but he cannot say the food’s name in Chinese. He asked the young lady who was sitting in front of him, ”Is there a way to say this food in Chinese?” The lady was happy to help and replied that the Chinese name for this dish is “鸡蛋面.” The man repeated after her, and the intonation was almost perfect. He, then, turned to the waiter behind the counter to order his food in Chinese. The waiter nodded, smiled, and held her thumb up to him. The young man was so happy because he successfully got the food that he wanted. This was a good experience to speak a new language. Although it was only a few words, he was brave enough to get over the first hurdle of nervousness and shyness.

Second, I think it is important to learn a new language. A language is a culture. I want to travel around the world and make foreign friends. I want to speak English like a native speaker because this language is common for most parts of the world. I am also interested in computer science. There are many programs that have their language set to English, so oftentimes I would have to translate programs to Chinese in order to understand it. I believe that understanding English will give me a better grasp of computer science because some words do not have a direct translation and can mean something slightly different.

Learning English is not an easy process, but I want to master it because it is a passion of mine.

Sincerely
