Why are words more important than grammar?

When we talk with others, we need lots of word to describe our ideas in our minds. That can transmit our feeling, images, concept in our head and let the one to understand. Mostly, people can get our meanings even we use the wrong grammar. But use the wrong words would make the meaning been misunderstood. That would make the communication becoming very difficult.

Why grammar is always secondary? Grammar is used to let the overall meaning to be more clearly. Before that, we have to use the appropriate words in the conversation, then grammar assist to do more clarification. If we used the exactly correct grammar, but wrong words, then meaning is disconnected. For example, if we want to get a lift from people on the road, we have to know the phrase “give a lift”. That is key phrase to let people know what’s your intent. Even you only speak one words or phrase with any other verb and noun in a sentence, your intent could still be understood. Just like when we listen to a foreigner speak in Chinese with pieces of words without any grammar to embellish, we still understand what he said. The speaking is not perfect, but it works. The target for transmitting our intent had been achieved. If we could get more words, it also helpful to describe our meaning with more details. The importance is obviously when we are talking with others by face to face. We use sounds, gestures, facial expressions and any other ways that could help to communicate. At this situation, grammar almost didn’t matter on the communication. And we still can talk smoothly.
