An Important Discovery

Up until now, I have learned 488 lessons. At the aspect of hearing, I always try to get the meaning of what I heard. When I met a word I was familiar with, I took my effort to remember its meaning. Recently, I learned something about the brain soaking, and then I slowly dawned that the priority thing I need to do isn’t to get the meaning but to listen clearly.

With a little uncertainty, I try to do so. I even told myself ‘if this doesn’t matter, I will change the method immediately.’ But when I tried to focus on listening clearly, rather than to understand the meaning, what surprised me was that I could get more clearly meaning than before.

Later on, I analized it. I found that if I just listen without thinking about the meaning, I was able to repeat almost everything I heard, and at the same time I could catch nearly the whole meaning naturally. Thinking and analyzing will get in the way of getting the whole message of the video effectively.

Therefore, I will set out to listen clearly rather than set out to understand. Maybe I have found another paradox in learning English. It is really incredible and interesting.
